The Polynesian Cultural Center is considered one of the most widely visited tourist destination in Hawaii. It is a living museum located in northern part of Hawaii. It is located on forty two acres of land owned by nearby Brigham Young University Hawaii, where most of the seven hundred employees are enrolled as student. Although it is a commercial scheme, profits from the Polynesian cultural centre are applied to different scholarship programs run by BYU-Hawaii.
In recent years it has become the best paid attraction of Hawaii. Visitors are able to watch cultural activities by the peoples who live in the islands of the Central and South Pacific Ocean. The Polynesian cultural centre is the place for the annual world firs Knife dance competition, in which participators present their skill with shining sword.
Polynesian cultural centre staff will proudly flash the famous shaka sign to visitors who offer it to them. This sign, made by extending thumb and little finger, was a unique greeting as a representation of Hamana Kalili, a local leader who had lost three fingers from his right hand in industrial accident. This sign is now known worldwide as a Hawaiian tradition.
