Generally speaking, getting around America is very easy and shouldn’t be a problem for any visitor. Most people automatically choose a car even when the cost of fuel is taken into account it is still relatively inexpensive. Nevertheless, when the journey distance is more than a few hours, it is the plane that usually wins. Of course you must not forget traveling by bus which is still popular and convenient but not everyone is aware of how to gauge if this is the best method or not.

Using the bus service in the United States.

Not everyone agrees this is the best way to get around America though and many feel it is at the basic end of travel. The truth of the matter however is that there is plenty of bus services to choose from like luxury or budget category, depending on the carrier. The bus industry in the United States is dominated by Greyhound, which is the only bus company with service nationwide. There are a couple of other large names, such as: Trailways and Coach USA but these are just networks of smaller privately owned carriers that have decided to share the same livery and marketing arrangement. Additionally the country also has several other reputed and popular regional operators who may seek the assistance of Greyhound on certain routes.

One new entrant has entered the market called ‘Chinatown bus’ - an expression used to describe the less costly bus companies who offer chopped down services on certain specified routes and are less costly than the conventional buys services. Originally they were used more by the Chinese migrant community - hence the name - but in recent times this low-cost form of travel has begun to appeal to a larger audience. Another new development in the bus industry is the introduction of luxury coaches which is a direct competitor to flights. These carriers offer first class amenities and luxury coaches who tend to be most successful for destinations that are fewer than 6 hours apart.

So, how should you decide when the bus is your best option? Here are a few questions that might help you make your decision: What is the budget that you have planned for your journey? If it is low, take the bus. S.

Will you need a car once you get to your destination? There is no need to lumber yourself with a car if it is not necessary and many US cities have, in recent years, become less accommodating to car users which can be a real problem.

How far are you going? If you are traveling less than a five or six hours it is probably faster to take the bus than to fly when you factor in waiting time at the airport. Additionally a bus would reach you right up to the downtown area which makes it so much easier to find your way about in the city.

If you are traveling to a more remote are of America then you are less likely to have an airport close by which means a bus may be the best method to get you where you want to go. What is the level of your hurry? If you have adequate time in your hands, traveling by bus could enable you to enjoy the landscape at leisure. If you are rushed then taking the bus may not be a good idea as the journey could include traffic jams and the bus in any case travels less fast than other methods of travel. If you are a visitor and intend to visit some of the more remote destinations, the bus is still the best way for you to do this.
